Reducing, Recycling, and Reimagining Waste for a Sustainable Campus
At the University of Kelaniya, we recognize that managing inorganic waste such as paper, plastic, and glass is essential to building a low-impact, climate-conscious academic community. Since the adoption of our Environmental Policy in 2014, we have implemented a robust set of waste reduction, segregation, and recycling programs that align with the university’s sustainability vision and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
We begin with proper waste separation at source, a critical step in effective material recovery:
🟦 Dedicated bins for paper, plastic, and glass
🟨 Clear labeling and signboards in academic departments, hostels, and canteens
👩🏫 Awareness programs for students and staff
The University of Kelaniya has adopted a wide range of digital tools and platforms to significantly minimize paper usage. These systems not only contribute to the university’s green campus goals but also promote operational efficiency, faster communication, and better record-keeping. The following categories outline the key digital solutions used across academic, administrative, and communication functions:
1. Digital academic platforms
Learning Management System (LMS):
All course content, lecture slides, reading materials, and assignments are shared through a centralized LMS platform. This drastically reduces the need for printed handouts and physical submission of assignments.
Online assessments and grading
Quizzes, exams, and project evaluations are conducted through digital platforms, with grades entered and managed electronically. Students receive feedback online, eliminating paper-based reporting.
E-thesis and research submissions:
Undergraduate and postgraduate students submit theses, proposals, and research reports in digital format via email or document management portals. This also supports plagiarism checks and easier archiving.
2. Administrative Digitalization
E-document circulation:
Internal communication, circulars, notices, and meeting agendas are shared via official email systems and faculty intranet, removing the need for printed memos or bulletin board notices.
Online leave and HR systems:
Staff apply for leave, submit medical records, and access pay slips through computer-based HR portals, minimizing the use of printed forms and physical files.
E-procurement and inventory management:
Purchase requests, approvals, and inventory tracking are conducted through digital workflows, streamlining procurement while reducing paper-based documentation.
Virtual committee meetings & e-minutes:
Department and faculty board meetings are frequently conducted online. Minutes, resolutions, and approvals are shared and archived digitally, promoting sustainable governance practices.
