The Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on Urban Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) for Climate Resilience in Sri Lanka took place on August 13, 2026, at Waters Edge, Battaramulla. The event was organized by the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of Kelaniya, as part of an overarching research project led by Dr. B. G. N. Sewwandi and funded by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN).
Providing a robust platform for critical knowledge exchange, the workshop united representatives from an extensive network of government entities, research organizations, universities, and environmental groups. Participating organizations included the Central Environmental Authority, Climate Change Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment, Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Disaster Management Centre, Department of Meteorology, Urban Development Authority, National Physical Planning Department, National Building Research Institute, International Water Management Institute, International Union for Conservation of Nature, Environmental Foundation Limited, United Nations Development Program, University of Peradeniya, and the University of Kelaniya.
The comprehensive program allowed stakeholders to share insights on pressing urban climate challenges and evaluate existing adaptation initiatives. Expert presentations delved into core areas such as climate resilience, ecosystem-based approaches, wetlands as essential nature-based solutions, and the integration of green-blue infrastructure into urban landscapes. Following the theoretical sessions, attendees engaged in interactive group activities specifically designed to co-develop practical nature-based solutions for creating resilient urban environments. Ultimately, the workshop succeeded in strengthening stakeholder collaboration and generating highly valuable, actionable insights to advance Ecosystem-Based Adaptation strategies across Sri Lanka.
